A moment. A great sports moment. We have all witnessed them. We talk about them the next day, into the next year and remember them beyond.

Every person, every team, every player has a great sports moment. From John Elway’s “Helicopter” to win the 1998 Super Bowl to the 2008 women’s collegiate softball team that carried the injured opposing player around the diamond, to your own perfect mogul run or hole in one, there are many amazing moments that celebrate the magic of sports. We celebrate winning moments, spectacular, historic or heroic moments. There are many we never witness.

Denver Sports is the non-profit organization charged with bringing sporting events to Denver. The Denver Sports Top 9 Moments is a unique video contest to nominate and vote for the greatest moments in Colorado sports. The statewide contest culminates with a red carpet awards show that connects and celebrates all levels of sports in Colorado from the prior year. From the pros, to collegiate, to prep, to youth to special moments and a moment of a lifetime. The inaugural event will be held the evening of March 1st, 2012, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Denver Sports has partnered with KUSA on the Denver Sports Top 9 Moments. The event will be promoted extensively through their broadcast and web mediums giving the “Top 9″ significant statewide reach. Promotion will begin in June and July of 2011 and continue in November and January 2012. Select portions of the event will potentially be re-broadcast either via television or the web.

The goal is to honor, recognize and celebrate the best sports moments that we know and more importantly don’t know in Colorado.

Denver Sports does not receive public funding in order to do its work. Bidding on and bringing events to Denver takes money and support. Your tax deductible donation and support of Denver Sports helps to continue our efforts to bring the best sporting events here.

Denver Sports works collaboratively with partners like VISIT Denver and the City of Denver to bring sporting events to the city.

Supports the bid process – every bid is an elaborate process and costs money.

Keeps Denver competitive with a “guarantee war chest.” Many marquee events require a monetary “guarantee.” Other, competing cities are well positioned with a tax payer funded sport war chest to bring these events to their city.

Aligns your company or organization with a non-profit of a different sort – we sell Denver as a perfect host city. It works not only for sport, but for businesses and for visitors.

Builds relationships with hosting events rights holders, national and international sport governing bodies and promoters.

Denver is a sporting city and sports are good for Denver. Sport showcases Denver as a vibrant, active city to the nation and the world. It’s good economically, it’s good socially.

Founded in 2001 as a private, not for profit organization, the Metro Denver Sports Commission’s charge is to bid on, bring and create sporting events for Denver.

Our mission is to elevate Denver through sport and enhance Denver’s reputation as the “Perfect Host City.” It’s a good investment. Why?

Sport is an economic engine, increasing local spending and bringing in “untargeted” visitors.

Showcases Denver on a national and global stage.

Like the arts, sport is part of our psyche and culture – both from a spectator and participant perspective.

Sport draws people and organizations together.

In the last three years, we’ve:

Hosted the 2008 NCAA Frozen Four Collegiate National Hockey Championships. It brought $11 million in direct economic impact to Denver.

Hosted the 2010 Olympic Curling Trials and named the first two teams to Team USA for the 2010 Olympic Games, bringing in $2 million in economic impact and Denver helped set the all-time attendance record. It was broadcast live across the country.

Hosted 2009 Sportaccord – the largest international conference of the Olympic movement. It was the first time this conference has ever been held in the Americas and brought $6 million in direct economic impact to the city.

Hosted the 2009 Churchill Cup – a three week international rugby event featuring the USA, England, Ireland, Argentina, Canada and Georgia. The Churchill Cup and Denver were showcased worldwide via Sky Sports.

Won the right to host the 2012 Women’s Final Four — the largest NCAA event Denver is able to host. It’s the first time it will be played in the Mountain Time Zone and will bring 30,000 visitors to town.

Became one of four finalists for the 2010 – 2012 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four. The Lacrosse Final Four has never been west of Philadelphia; Denver Sports’ bid was the closest any western city has ever been to hosting the event.

Won the right to host the 2014 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championships.

DENVER. ELEVATING SPORT. ENERGIZING LIVES.

Founded in 2001, the Metro Denver Sports Commission, or Denver Sports, is a privately funded 501c3 non-profit organization whose vision is to ELEVATE SPORT and ENERGIZE LIVES. With a mission of attracting, facilitating and supporting the economic and social vitality of the greater metro area, Denver Sports works to draw premier domestic and international sporting events to the Denver market.

OUR PURPOSE

To create a legacy of economic and social vitality through sport.

OUR MISSION

Through our collaborative efforts around sporting events, the Metro Denver Sports Commission attracts, facilitates and supports

Economic vitality by attracting major events that generate a significant economic impact on the Metro Denver area

Social vitality by promoting youth access, participation and volunteerism in sport.

The 2008 Frozen Four and the 2007 NCAA West Regional for college hockey came to Denver because of the work and partnerships created by Denver Sports. 2009 featured the US Curling Olympic Trials, Sport Accord and The Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament; three important events in Denver’s desire to create an international sport footprint. In 2010 the famed football rivalry between the University of Colorado and Colorado State University returned to Denver for a ten year run known as the Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown. This game returned to Denver because of the collaborative efforts of Denver Sports. In January of 2011 Denver Sports hosted the Denver Big Air World Cup Snowboarding competition. The events that Denver Sports has brought to the city have contributed in excess of 70 million dollars of economic impact and greatly enhance the image of Denver as a major global host city.

Upcoming events coming to Denver because of the efforts of Denver Sports include the 2012 NCAA Basketball Women’s Final Four and the 2014 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championships.

Denver Sports is not just about events, though; it’s also about community. To assist in fulfilling the social vitality portion of the organization’s mission, Denver Sports creates opportunities to bring sports to underserved youth in the greater Denver area. Through access and participation, the Metro Denver Sports Commission promotes the positive impact sports can have on youth.

Through its events and the work of its charities arm, Denver Sports is committed to making Denver a premier city in which to live, work and visit. Governed by a Board of Directors comprised of local business and community leaders, Denver Sports is primarily funded by corporate and individual partners, government agencies, and economic development entities.

The work of Denver Sports would not be possible without the collaborative efforts of area businesses, educational institutions, civic organizations and professional sports teams, as well as the involvement and support of the greater Denver community.
